The Cocobolo King!

When Doug arrived this week at my home I was very intrigued by the heavy case he brought along with him. As he set the custom table up for his wonderful new effect "Skulduggery" the wood looked amazing and that was when he told me the whole outfit was made out of Cocobolo Wood. Well you normally see this wood used for wands or paddles but to see so much beautiful wood in one place takes your breath away.

This one of a kind piece by Doug is certainly his most ambitious to date, and I must admit to being very impressed. I remember the first time Doug visited my home back in 2001 and he showed me some of his work. Those early attempts were good, and certainly better than anything I could create, but they lacked the refinement of someone who has been working with wood for many years. Over the years he has become more and more confident and these days builds some very fine pieces. This confidence shows in this wonderful new effect: Skulduggery.

As with most of Doug’s work it comes with an interesting and amusing story, but the basic effect is as follows: you show 3 skulls and ask a spectator to remove any skull and place it in the small box, while covering up the other two with the larger box. This is done while your back is turned. Of course without touching anything you can always deduce which skull was placed in the little box. This can be repeated as many times as desired. On the final attempt they again make their selection (there is absolutely no force), and this time you are unable to discern the color. When you look inside the small box on the table, the skull has vanished and when the R.I.P. box is lifted there is a figure standing there, and the color of his eyes matches the missing skull. This is a great surprise ending to an already impressive routine.

The table does all the work for you using some impressive electronics and it is very reliably made. I’d like to see one of these is a smaller close-up setting and think Doug would then have a real winner on his hands!

Keep them coming Doug!

Lassen Triple Threat

This new batch of Triple Threats from Todd are perfection. Todd has outdone even himself with his newest group of gaffs. The 1921 BU coins are great and match all my other sets. The gaff acts just like one coin when you need it to. There is no concern of separation or rattle. The weight is also just like a real coin, which makes the gaff feel even more realistic. The inner coin also has the look of a real coin not that paper thin look that that other gimmick has by you know who.

I have a soft Morgan TT as well and like this one just as much. Unlike George I do like the JOL purses and was told that they retard the aging process. Not sure on this point, but they do hold the coin well and protect it from nicks and drops.

Beg, borrow and steal, do whatever it takes to get one. You will love it and never part with it.

Are There Any Losers from Todd?

Came back from vacation and this beauty was waiting for me. This is one of Todd’s most requested item I’ve heard. Now that I have it, I can see why it’s so popular. One coin becomes two, then three, and all contained in one gaff, nothing added or taken away. I have shown the sequence with the gaff in reverse on the first three images.

I asked Todd to make mine in bright AU 1921 Morgans. I like the details on these clean coins, though many may prefer the quiet, softer, older coins. The magnets used are just right to hold everything together, but easy to un-nest.

Todd included in this recent batch a JOL coin purse…a nice touch. However, I have used these purses when they first came out and I now have them in some drawer…unused. My own experience is that, though the craftsmanship is superb, I find that long term storage in these purses induces an ugly tarnishing on the silver coins. Now, that may be acceptable if you have bright AU coins, as you can clean off the tarnish back to the original luster, but I would have concerns what this could do to soft used coins that come with a beautiful patina.

Great prop for a fantastic effect from Tommy Wonder

This is a very nicely made prop for Tommy Wonder’s Rubik’s Card routine, described in both Books of Wonder and the Visions of Wonder DVD series. Well made and thoughtfully constructed. Only slight negative is the light weight and soft finish of the wooden box. The small blocks are very artfully done and the mechanism is very reliable. All in all, a great piece and a fantastic effect.

The Trickery Has Done it Again!

Thank God the magic community has a company like The Trickery to keep quality magic alive. Howard Baltus, The Trickery’s founder, has always had an appreciation for well-crafted apparatus, and has gone out of his way to make it available to his customers by either hunting it down or having it created himself. His work with Bob Solari under the Definitive Magic banner yielded some of the most unique, and quality-driven effects the industry has seen in a long time.

The Trickery’s latest effort in this vein is the Definitive Atomic Ball. They have produced several versions of this effect in the past, but all pale in comparison to this version created in partnership with Magic Wagon of Thailand. For the life of me I can’t understand why there isn’t more of a buzz about the work this company is doing. The quality and attention that they are putting into their effects are really second-to-none. I would compare them to other craftsmen, but that really isn’t fair since Magic Wagon’s products utilize materials and production methods I’ve never really seen before in magic manufacturing. Even contemporary producers like Dave Powell, RNT II, and Colin Rose aren’t experimenting with the techniques and materials that Magic Wagon is employing. But I digress.

The Definitive Atomic Ball is outstanding in every way. The effect is quick but baffling and the construction of this version is impeccable. You will love handling this, displaying this, but most of all performing this.

Fantastic Piece

I’ve had this for several months now and it’s a great piece. Workmanship is fantastic, and Francois will customize this for you in many ways. With a little practice and thought, this trick is very, very deceptive. A wonderful iteration of this effect.

True wonder

This product is the best I ever bought. It feels like you can do real magic. Labco Magic gives you the best you can get on this kind of products. It gives you the power to predict in which hand a spectator holds a dice, left or right. You can do it with three spectators at the same time, and as a climax name even the different colors of the dice they picked.

It also comes with five ESP cards for amazing readings. It is so good, you really have to make it more believable than it is, or they get crazy.

The best is: you can be very creative with these tools and make up your own routines. It is not just one thing, the possibilities are endless.

And best of it all: it works all the time. The apparatus you get has versatile extra’s, so it is a complete mindreading kit. And there is super service on everything. I had one problem with a part and Sören Harbo replaced it within 3 days. His service and advice is great.

This is magic at its best.
