I’ll Bet You Haven’t Seen This One!

Ed acquired this from the Bert Adams Estate (Boston) sometime in the 1940’s to early 1950’s. It has the look and feel of a much earlier piece (obviously not a Magic Shop item), but I’ve not found it described in any of the standard texts I’ve consulted.

Effect: A large velvet covered board (approximately 17 1/2 inches by 14 1/2 inches) with an easel back is sitting on a plain ungimmicked table. Two golden cords are anchored at the top of the two upper corners. A hook is affixed at the other end of each cord.

An orange silk handkerchief is freely displayed and spread out covering the front of the velvet board.

A wooden box (5 inches square) with a black spot in the center of the lid is opened and shown empty. This empty box is now suspended from the golden cords so it is hanging in the center of the silk-covered board.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS ERIE TO WATCH…

Very slowly the orange silk begins to melt into the wooden box! The hankerchief just keeps getting smaller and smaller. The Magician is not touching the handkerchief nor any of the apparatus while this event is taking place.

After the handkerchief has completely disappeared from sight, the Magician removes the closed box from the golden cords and brings it directly to the audience. The first point noted is that the black spot on the lid is not a hole, but simply a painted black circle. Next, the top, bottom and sides of the box are observed to be 100% solid and the hasp is securely closed (all of this is true!).

When the spectator opens the box, there’s the orange silk handkerchief residing within AND a previously vanished item can be found within its folds.

I love my mommy, I mean mummy!

This masterpiece has long been discontinued and difficult to find on the market; I guess owners are relunctant to part with their mummy and I can understand that. Well I finally got one. Sure, I paid extra for it through ebay but once I had it my hands, I have no regrets. It’s classic Warner craftmanship and my collection sure looks nice with this baby, especially among the other Egyptian pieces. Teak sure makes the item look great and, in Alan’s hand, there is no better master of the woodcraft. Most Highly Recommended!

Can The Surprises Ever End?

And I thought Alan could not surprise me after some great pieces in my collection, but he sure can and likely will in the future. This is simply an amazing piece of Egyptian themed mini-magic – my favorite style because of the beautiful designs and that inherent mystical quality of this subject. Pictures unfortunately never give these Warner pieces any justice.

I have already exhausted all my praises for this wonderful craftsman and I realize my reviews are getting rather too repetitive. It’s just that there is no fault that can be found with any Warner piece. So why do I continue writing them – well, simply because they are sincere "thank you!" notes for each and every piece that comes to my collection.

Over The Top.

The very BEST. One of the best classics on magic. Joe Berg was a real pro.He knew as much about the profession as any magician. His book is one of the most sought after magic collectables. Anyone who has one of these books should hold on to it tightly.

A Wonderfully Novel Card Revelation!

Here’s a new one of a kind item from Yours Truly here at Martin’s Magic! I think it is my best so far!

You have a card chosen. (BTW, I never actually use the Tiger Decks for real performances, but they photograph well, so I often use them when taking photographs – just in case you cared!).

Then you open a small box and show it has all of these miniature scrabble tiles that can be freely moved around in the box. You close up the box and start to gently shake the box with initially fairly large motions. As you do this you can hear the letters move around. As you continue shaking, the motions get smaller and smaller until in the end you hear nothing move. Then you ask the spectator to name their card, and ask them to lift the lid off of the box, and there neatly spelt out is the name of their card! Another Off The Shelf miracle comes to an end.

Reset is almost instant, but currently it is the same card that is revealed each time so it is not so good for walk around.

My wife said Wow! and smiled. That is good enough for me!

Gorgeous little pagoda

I received this piece for my Warner collecition today and it has to be the cutest little version of this effect, ever. I had never considered this trick in the past. Even nicely handcrafted versions like Milson-Worth could not persuade me, but Alan’s tiny rendition is irresistable. It is very tiny at 3 1/2 inches, but that’s Warner mini-magic for you and, again, it’s just adorable. The idea of the chinese pagoda is brilliant and beautifully rendered with bright colors. I have eight painted pieces from Alan and this one is my current favorite. Granted that his current teak mini-magic is amazing, these early painted items from Alan are still a sight to behold. Unfortunately, these are no longer made by Alan and acquiring these early pieces are a true challenge.
