George Robinson is to be congratulated on this one

This item took nearly a year to receive, but it was more than well worth it. When I first learned of this new CW item, I couldn’t believe the price. Rather than ordering online, I had to call George at Viking to verify the price and wasted no time to be the second person ordering it.

Well, the chest is a BEAUTY, practically museum quality, and a testament to skilled woodworking. The images on the Viking site definitely do not do justice to this prop. The choice of SOLID hardwoods is to be commended. Dark walnut contrasts wonderfully with the lighter colored maple. The maple used for the doors is matched, nicely grained, figured on one side, and inlayed with walnut accents..gorgeous. The Japanese design to the chest is most attractive and should get the stares.

The chest is subtlety gimmicked in three places, and yes, you will need to read the instructions to find them. Quality accessories, some gimmicked, come with the chest to perform the SEVEN effects described in the well-written multi-page instructions.

The first effect is the classic "Astro-Ball" done with a gold/black cloth ball and a turned wood Japanese bowl. Second, is "Ring on Wand" – borrowed ring followed by large brass ring penetrate solid brass wand running across the chest with tips clearly visible protruding on both walls. George added his own improvement to this old Grant effect. Third, is "Samurai’s Legacy", a large Chinese coins and cord penetration effect. Fourth, is "Sefalaljia" – a classic single ring on cord using the "hook" method plus a bonus non-hook alternative called "Massecar Variation" is described. "Life’s Lesson/The Marriage Ceremony" is the two-loop rope linking effect popular in another apparatus, Dean’s Box. The remaining two are old effects, "Hindu Ring Mystery" by Eddie Joseph and "Block Cord", done in style with this chest. The supplied block has a red lacquered finish with brass Chinese coins inlayed on 4 sides..very nice!

The effects are not necessarily "originals" but definitely first class acts in the context of this versatile chest. As mentioned in the instructions, the Spirit Chest represents a "unique theatre". It turns otherwise "simple" effects into a truly magical experience. A worthy addition to the CW line, I would have paid twice the asking price, if not more. Now, hopefully, ideas and new effects can be gathered, in due time, for a manuscript. What do you think, George?

Now, this is an Imp Bottle!

I just this received this "little" magic. I had ordered it based on the review from Andy Martin. I love natural wood magic apparatus and I had owned, as a kid, the Adams Imp Bottle. So this was nostalgia calling to me when I first heared of it. First, it’s definitely a good sized, "hefty", bottle compared to the plastic Imp Bottle from Adams and the working is similar but the gimmick is not the same as in the original. I would give the handling a 4 star (sorry, I can’t say more without devulging the secret), but the craftsmanship of the bottle and the innovation on the method are first class, so I give the overall effect a 5 star rating.

Perfect Match – Every Time!

I love this effect! It is based on the same principle used in one of the phases in Larry Becker’s Casino Royale, but this effect is much more impromptu.

You basically talk about how you’ve been collection matchbooks for each hotel you stay at and clearly show a bag full of different books. You pull out a few of the books to show they are all different and to wax and wane fondly about what you did at that hotel! The spectator then has a free choice out of any of the matchbooks and of course it matches the door key that you were left with.

Reset is instant and it is very easy to do. There is no switching of matchbooks or using clear forcing bags or any such madness! This makes a lot of sense and is a wonderful effect.

Highly Recommended!

This had me fooled!

This is a clever little miracle from Wayne Dobson and I love it!

You show a domino with 6 dots that can freely be moved around and ask a spectator to position them in any combination they fancy. Then as a gag you talk about how magicians use mirrors all the time in their acts. You bring out a mirror and explain how you had made a prediction of the domino they would create – just look in the mirror and there is the reflection of their chosen domino!

Of course they are not impressed, so then the magician turns over the mirror and their is there choice printed on the back!

This is a very sweet fool proof prediction, with instant reset and very easy to do. It will fool you too!

This is my favorite of the Wayne Dobson miracles I recently purchased. Keep an eye on this guy – he has some wonderful magic!

Great Book!

I was quite surprised to read the previous review, it is obvious that this person knows very little about magic or didn’t actually read this book. I have been lucky enough to have seen Mr. Cervon perform at the Magic Castle and he is truly one of the best. I have also seen him fry magicians and layman alike with some of the tricks in this book. There are nearly 70 items and if you only got the "Devil’s Elevator" you would have gotten your moneys worth. It is a very easy and an extremely commercial trick. Looking at the contents I see many items that I use but will only mention a few of what I think are "classic" tricks. "Perfect Speller" (a killer for magicians and layman but be sure to use the option to tell the spectator if he lied or told the truth), "Aerodynamic Aces" (the original invisible palm ace routine, a great trick no matter how you cut it) and try his "Open Prediction" I saw him do this on TV once and thought it was a stooge. It’s that good.

In short this is book that any magician should not be without, I own all the books with his name attached as I find them to be FULL of top quality practical professional magic.

Ahh..junior is still good magic

Wow..I had reviewed elsewhere Blasted, by England’s Harry Stanley, and mentioned Blasted Jr. in the review. Well, looks like Andy found one. As I stated in my original review, this is a very visual effect that I have very fond memories of being bewildered at Hollywood Magic when the staff magician at the shop fooled me badly with it. This was many years ago and I have owned both.

This version is not as "dramatic" as it’s bigger brother. The use of half dollar sized coins and the champagne glass really adds to the overall magical effect. If there are two strong points to this version, they are 1) the effect is more "compact" and can probably be carried in your pocket, and 2) the smaller coins probably are easier to handle, especially the "vanish" of the copper coin moments before the "penetration".

Still, it is Blasted and one of my favorite coin effects..so, it gets 5 stars.

Wow! This is Amazing!

This effect is beautiful, clever, and convincing, but does require getting very comfortable with the method by practicing it enough so that it is automatic – it is not hard and the impact is so huge the effort is more than worth it. In fact the more convincing your presentational skills are the easier you will find this.

Once you get it smooth I defy you to find a more convincing piece of mentalism. Now factor in that it costs less than $50, packs flat and doesn’t need any pesky batteries (as so much "mentalism" does these days), you just can’t go wrong!

As for the method, you will just die when you see it – very clever indeed. I believe you can fool anyone who is not in the know with this. But you do need to spend a few hours so that it is second nature.

I am sure you will not be dissappointed with your small investment on this one.

Different from Douglas-Wayne Illusioneering, But More Practical!

Ok so if you have ever seen the Douglas-Wayne Illusioneering version of this effect you will at first be a bit disappointed. The Douglas-Wayne Illusioneering version is a faithful reproduction of the drawings in Hoffmann’s Modern Magic. It is smaller, particularly the tower the coin rises up on, and it is slightly better made. However, it is quite a big pain to set-up and how the coin rises behind the window can be seen in certain lighting conditions.

With the Mikame version, reset is much, much easier using a clockwork mechanism and the coin rises in broad daylight with no clue as to how even with bright lights shining on the tower. It is also wide enough so that the coin rises without touching the sides so it really does look like it is rising unaided.

The kicker of course is that when it gets to the top you hear it hit the top and then find it in the little box that is locked and on top. The coin can be signed if desired.

To the audience this Mikame version probably looks better and since it is much easier to reset, I believe it is more likely to be actually performed, rather than sitting on the shelf looking cool.

The collector will certainly prefer the Douglas-Wayne Illusioneering version, however if you really want to perform this more than once a year I think you are better off with the Mikame version. Although the craftsmanship doesn’t quite measure up to Douglas-Wayne Illusioneering Quality it is still a very nice piece and something you will be proud to own and perform.

Reflecta Thot’s Great

We recently purchased the manufacturing rights to this effect from Helene’s Magic and it is great… If I had enough money I would stop production and keep this one all to myself. As for now we are selling the remaining of Helene’s stock at an unbeleivable low price of just $12.50 each for the first 50, then back to $15.00 for the rest. This is a great effect, we have some additional thooughts that might make this even easier to perform, as if that would be needed.

Anyway this is a great effect and if anyone can get their hands on a set they should grab’em up

Osterlind rules!

I just love watching Richard Osterlind! With almost no special props he performs clean and incredibly powerful mentalism right before your very eyes. When he takes you through the explanations your respect for this man contines to grow. He just nails the effects with the simplest of methods and techniques.

The 2nd volume which is exclusively on his stacked deck (the Breakthrough Card System) is one of my favorites as he performs a whole act using the same stack each time, and each effect is wildy different. He also explains in detail the stack itself so you don’t even need to buy the book!

This is very practical mentalism from one of the best performers in the business. Highly recommended!
