Another Dave Powell Beauty!

I’ve always been fascinated with nest of box effects, so it was pretty obvious I’d get this new item by Dave Powell. As usual with Dave’s work these boxes are beautiful. He’s thought through the routine and has a great approach for keeping everything in sight all along. The load is done under cover, but in plain sight. Having the extra heavy canvas bag is certainly a nice approach.

The only issue I have is that the photo’s on Dave’s website (and copied by most dealers) are somewhat deceiving. The effect does not come with a ball of wool or elastic bands. Also there is no tassel on the key. It is always disappointing when you pay a lot for an effect, but have to scramble around for extra relatively cheap items to actually use the effect. Dave’s items often appeal to collector’s and the last thing they want to do is take a trip to Michaels!

However, I purchased this item from Stevens Magic and Mark Stevens knows how to keep his customers happy. He added all the items to perform this effect right out of the box, just as it should have come from Dave. So thanks Mark, if you ask him nicely I’m sure he’ll do the same for you. There are few dealers left who care about you as much as Mark and Joe and his team. So support the good guys and purchase this from Stevens Magic, you won’t be disappointed in the product or the service!

Please note, after writing this review I heard back from Dave Powell and he is now including everything too. Thanks Dave, it is the little things that make all the difference!

What A Rare Treat!

There is almost nothing quite like waking up Christmas morning to open a brand new trick crafted by my good friend George Robinson. This is a beautiful item put out in conjunction with The Trickery and I for one hope these guys continue to put out more jewels like this.

The effect is old and the last time I saw a similar one was in Alan Warner’s Enigmatic. However, I believe the principle is older than that. Howie, at The Trickery, had a cheaper version for years. This version has been improved not only in materials but also method with a neat extra addition that now makes the effect even more amazing.

In effect you show the audience two sets of five ESP chips and the magician places a chip inside the box face-down , followed by the spectator. The Magician always goes first. When all five chips have been replaced they are tipped out on the base and one by one are shown to match perfectly. The order can be different every time and although the trick is not self-working it is easy to do.

If this is how 2012 is going to continue we have some amazing treats in store.

Highly recommended for collector’s and close-up performers everywhere!

Plays Anywhere!

This is one versatile effect – kids’ shows, science shows, stage, emcee, seance – you name it. I always have it on hand – either scheduled in the act, or ready in case I need one more routine. Packs small, plays big, and always entertains. What more can you ask of a $50 prop?

Perfection Attained

I’ve owned four different versions of Hydro Die and I must say this recent creation from the Magic Wagon team is by far the best. It looks the most intriguing, is the most convincing, and operates the smoothest.

Magic Wagon have been around for about seven years and over that time they have created a very impressive collection of beautiful and functional magic. There are very few manufacturers who consistently create magic of this caliber and quality, just take a look at some of their best items.

Magic Wagon continue to create small runs of amazing magic, but they sell out quickly, so if you are looking for some amazing items keep an eye on their site.

Highly Recommended for Collector’s and Close-up Performers of miracles.

Fine Quality Props and Great Idea!

I really like this effect from Mark Leveridge and beautifully manufactured by that master Chip guy Per Clausen.

In effect, you show two small brass screw top boxes: one with a silver colored top and base and the other with a red colored top and base. The spectator freely places her ring into the silver box, and you place a coin in the red box. Then without any tricky moves the ring and coin switch places.

This effect is easy to do with no complex sleights. However, it does require some practice to get the handling smooth and clean. But since it all looks above board you are not really under any heat at the moments of the moves. Long before the audience thinks the effect has happened you are left clean and smooth.

Due to the nature of the transposition, you could devise other uses for these boxes such as using the one ahead principle for predictions.

I think this is a winner from Mark Leveridge – check out his site, he has some very interesting effects just waiting to be discovered.

After a Closer Look . . .

I previously reviewed this prop based on pictures and a general knowledge of the routine. Subsequently, I had the good fortune to purchase this very piece on Quality Magic, and I like it even more in person.
Doug Gorman’s craftsmanship is outstanding – Mel Babcock quality. This is a beautiful close-up prop, but it’s too small for stage. Doug? Mel? Jay? Won’t one of you build a stage-size version?
The apparatus comes with two routines. The "Selbit’s Magic Blocks" routine is a winner – quick, easy, and baffling, with no shells, no difficult "moves," and sparingly little to memorize. And believe me, NO ONE will know how it’s done. The "Instant Insanity" routine, on the other hand, includes a statistical narrative sure to cure insomnia.
This beautiful walnut prop is a one-off, but you can buy a plastic version for under $20.

I Want One!

This may not qualify as a "review," as I’ve never owned the pictured effect – but I sure will if Doug ever makes more! Apparently this beautiful set is a "one-off." That’s a shame, because Instant Insanity is an excellent effect; but most available versions are made like plastic toys.
Thanks for posting this, Andy – even though I can’t buy one, it’s good to know it’s out there. And Doug . . . BUILD MORE!

Review of Mutilated Parasol by Abbott’s

I purchased the Mutilated Parasol by Abbott’s I paid over $500.00. When I received it I was in shock. I opened the package and the hankies looked small and torn. When I opened the umbrella, black paint chips fell all over the floor. There were white spots that I needed to re-paint. I also noticed that the change bag was not working properly either. I had to fix it.When I opened the Umbrella, it would not stay open and I had to hold it open. I noticed that the youtube videos with Marty and Duane Laflin performing it and the demo video online were versions of this effect from years ago that Abbott’s no longer sell. I was not aware of this when I bought it. This was very misleading to me. They should state that what you see is not what you get. Since they will not tell you, I am telling you. What they sell now is terrible. I just threw mine in the garbage. Do not ever buy from Abbott’s. I specifically wrote in my order to please check the product before sending it out. They obviously did not.
Yours truly, Vincent. This is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So Help me God.

Milk Wonder perfect Review

I just bought this after seeing a video of it performed. Yes. It looks exactly like these photos you see. It is a quality product. It is self-contained and convenient because you do not have to fill it or bring milk. It also does something no milk pitcher or regular milk glass does. It refills itself in seconds.
Now the downside. You have to watch your angles and your audience cannot be looking from the top. I was unaware of this when I bought. it. But standing should take care of this. Also, I have heard reviews of a couple of customers who left the glass in a hot car in the summer and the milk evaporated. Since the milk is sealed, this makes the glass useless. But if you keep the glass in a cool place, you should be fine.
This is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help me God.
So just take care of it, practise on front of a mirror, get used to the orientation of the glass and you should be fine.
It has many uses. Great for puppets, also pouring milk in a newspaper cone or in a bag. Very versatile. I am glad I bought mine.
Yours truly, Vincent

Beautiful Warner Magic

Alan has yet to lose his "magic touch" to handcrafted magic. Here we have another limited edition boxed set from him. This is a mechanically improved version of his Chinese themed Spirit Cabinet from his early years, but with an Egyptian story, a popular one with Alan and collectors of his magic.

The cabinet is wider than the Spirit Cabinet, but operation is so much smoother and consistently reliable, irregardless of temperature or humidity – an issue I found with the Spirit Cabinet. Here you have a choice of either King Tut (first 5 sets) or Queen Tiye (second 5 sets for sale) to appear in the cabinet versus the bottled spirit in the old version.

Again, I am so pleased for another addition to my Warner collection, which remains intact since I started back in late 2001. I realize the economy is messed up, yet, in contrast to other "collectibles", have seen dimished returns on Warner items when they come up for auction lately. This surprises me as these are extremely high quality magic, unequaled by many out there, and in due time the value of Alan’s work will speak for itself as it did some time ago.
