Tricks With Chips is a series of tricks by Erhard Liebenow of Germany. It was published by Werry (Werner Geissler) in his Die Magische Welt magazine and the copyright was then purchased by Supreme Magic Company c. 1969 and sold by them here. However, this booklet was published in Germany by Erhard Liebenow in English. There is no date on this publication (of course!).
Differences between the two:
Routines:
The Supreme version effects are marked with *. The Supreme version includes one effect not included with the Deluxe called Chips Through Card. There are a few items required in this deluxe version that some of the routines require such as (thread, silk, magicians wax, some international coins, 1 extra cup) that are not included. But these are readily available with the possible exception of the extra cup (required for just for one routine).
Notice:The Supreme version is edited, illustrated, and re-routined by Ken de Courcy and there is no doubt that it flows better from routine to routine. If you wanted to perform a full set, then the Supreme booklet would certainly be easier to learn from.
The secret with these chips is you have to go through each routine in your hands and to see what works for you. Some require more skill than others. Given that Erhard won awards with his routine using these chips it is reasonable to think that some sleights and skill are in fact required. The Supreme description makes you think these routines are all easy to do. And although I believe it is true that most of the moves are fairly easy, learning the routines, selling the routines and performing them with confidence is an entirely different thing.
Even if there are no complex sleights you won’t just sit down and be able to perform an award winning routine 🙁
However, you might be able to sit down and pull out 2 or 3 effects that work for you so give yourself and afternoon and see what you can come up with, I’m sure you’ll find something 🙂
Effect: There are many routines included with this set and even if you don’t have the time or skills to perform the full award winning set, I’m confident you’ll find a couple to make you happy.
PHANTOM CHIPS.
Two black chips are shown. One penetrates the table then another and you end the routine with a transposition between the left and right hands.
CHIP TRANSPO.
A small white cover is shown, then two red chips are placed under it. A third red chip is placed between two black ones, so you do not even have to touch the chips with your fingers. Suddenly the red chip has vanished. There it is, in the cap between the other two !
ROUGE ET NOIR.
Three black chips and one red are placed out in the form of a square. One is covered by a Jumbo card, – one at a time, the three chips are placed under the cloth, they penetrate right through and appear under the card. All the chips can be shown on both sides.
FLYING SAUCERS
Two chips, one red on both sides, one black on both sides miraculously change places even in a spectator’s hand. Again both sides on each chip are shown. This is clever magic, with no small loose covers to push on or off, and it’s SO easy to do.
CHAMELEON CHIPS.
A tremendous finish to a routine. Four red chips and one black chip are shown on both sides. One at a time the four red chips change to become BLACK on both sides. The original black chip is pushed through the cloth on the table and changes to red,’ and simultaneously the four black chips on the table, also change to red!
HANKY CHIPS.
Two chips, one red and one black and a handkerchief which can be borrowed are the properties used here, and yet a bewildering vanish and re-appearance takes place.
ROTATING CHIP.
A single chip is shown on both sides and held vertically and with a flick down is allowed to land flat on the jumbo card (or other hard surface) and as it rocks back and forth it suddenly splits into two chips. It takes a little knack and you have to choose the right shell/chip combo but when you see it work it looks very surprising.
GIANT CHIP.
You slide a single chip from your left hand to the right and when you lift your hand the chip has grown into a Giant chip. (Giant Chip not included.)
CHIP TO COIN.
A little chip is passed under a giant chip and suddenly the little chip changes to a coin. (Giant Chip not included.)
COME AND GO CHIPS.
A multi-phase routine with the productions of 4 red chips, the penetrations of the chips through the table, ending with the disappearance of all 4 red chips.
AMAZING CHIP.
Two chips are shown and placed behind two playing cards which are taped together to form a screen. You don’t go near the chips but simply blow the cards down and one of the chips has completely vanished.
SEVEN UP.
Seven black chips are cleanly laid out and then stacked in a row. They are then covered with a cup and after slamming the cup down on the table they instantly change to red and they are apparently shown on both sides – a very striking change.
INTERNATIONAL COIN COCKTAIL.
Two cups are shown empty and after stacking you are able to produce a cocktail of international coins. (Extra cup not included.)
