Sorcerer’s Stone Improved by Viking Mfg., Phil Matlin, Lubor Fiedler

(c. 1985,2007) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This effect is based upon Phil Matlin’s of Canada product Silver Sanctum c. 1979. Phil gave his permission to create the Viking version with the bejeweled brass boxes and mystic routine adding greatly to the original. Silver Sanctum employs a unique method that was independently developed by Phil Matlin, but in fact it uses the exact same method created by Lubor Fiedler c. 1972 with his Time Element Cylinders, but at the time Phil Matlin was unaware of Lubor’s creation.

The routine and the addition of the third box is credited to George Robinson Jr. with input from Jason Wittaker (thanks Jason for your help).

Effect: Three unique brass boxes, each adorned with a distinct jewel are displayed. The Magus/Mentalist requests that an object from one of two pouches be placed within one of the boxes and sealed. This is done while the performer’s back is turned. Next, the boxes are mixed on the table and the performer asked to turn around. Without asking any questions or touching the boxes, the Magus removes a stone from his pocket and holds this momentarily above each box. Immediately he names the selected box and the unknown hidden object!

Effect #2: The boxes are mailed to a client, customer, friend, etc. He is instructed to call you the moment the package arrives, but not to open it until he has you on the phone. You instruct him to concentrate on one of the boxes by mentally noting the jewel adorning the box. Without saying a word, he is to open that box and place a coin within it, closing the box immediately afterwards. All three boxes are now sealed in a padded-self addressed return envelope which you have supplied. Your friend is to drop this package in the mail and immediately call you back. You divine the correct box containing the sealed coin! Over the phone, even thousands of miles away! And before you receive the package.

Effect #3: The performer asks for the loan of a dollar bill, which he crumbles into a ball tossing same over his shoulder. The person catching the crumbled bill will help in this next experiment. While the performer’s back is still toward the spectators, the randomly selected spectator is asked to select one of the jeweled boxes resting on the table before him. Once he has made his silent selection, he is asked to place the balled-up bill into that container, sealing the box and mixing them on the table. The performer turns for the first time and faces the audience. He removes a genuine crystal point from a pouch and passes the crystal over the two boxes. After a moment of concentration, he announces the correct box containing the bill! Before the box is opened, he asks for the spectator to record some random thoughts, numbers, letters that are now becoming clear to the performer, via the crystal. The performer rambles off a series of numbers and a letter or two. This looks oddly familiar and it is pointed out that it could very well be a serial number. The spectator verifies that the performer has not only divined the correct box, but upon removing the bill, compares it’s serial number to the performers rambling…The serial numbers match 100%!
