The Big Trick by Richard Himber
(c. 1964) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)This is Richard Himber’s brilliant “The Big Trick” 🙂 This was initially released with the Topper effect, and was later advertised on its own. It is more startling than Topper which is probably why they did that.
I’ve seen many version’s of the razor blade cutting the deck, and it all started with Richard Himber’s Big Trick. The quality of this box is something to behold: fine Italian leather, 24k gold dectorating, and solid gleaming chrome. Looks stunning and beautiful.
The effect is easy to do and the reset takes less about a minute. I love it 🙂
Effect: They’ll do anything to get the big trick!
Willie Schneider called us up and asked ”What is this big trick with the confetti they’re all raving about at the Dixie Hotel?” We told him we would rather have him get it from the omnipotent one him self. “At least tell me what happens!” So, we told him as follows:
We were all sitting around watching Charlie Miller perform his miracles, when the Great Man burst the door open, and in his quiet, unassuming manner, shouted at tho top of his voice, “Wait ’til you see this effect!” And, without as much as a by-your-leave, grabbed one of the boys’ decks, and started to shuffle the cards. Then he took out a razor blade from his pocket, and demanded that we drop the blade on any card we liked. “Look at that card,” he instructed, “and drop all the cards in this box, after you shuffle them thoroughly.”
Now, with a leer on his face, he tossed the blade into the box and closed it. “1 will shake the box, and the blade will find its way to the selected card.” All the boys were watching him carefully now, as this guy Himber is a sneaky guy.
Sure enough, it happened! Himber opened the box, and did a triple take. “1 shook the box too much, and now the cards are chopped up like confetti.” He turned the box over, and a shower of confetti poured from the box, but in the midst of the confetti was one whole card. “How about that!” he exclaimed, “The razor missed one card! What was the name of your card?” he questioned. We told him it was the Ace of Diamonds. He turned over the card, and, you guessed it, it was the Ace of Diamonds!!
Charlie Miller thought a moment, and said “Do it again!” And when Charlie says “Do it again, you know he’s puzzled! The Genius smiled happily, and said “Well, looks like we got another winner.”
The gorgeous metal, leather-covered box, will be a proud addition to your magical apparatus. This trick is SO BIG we had to take a whole page to tell you about it.
