The Red Ruby (Der Rote Rubin) by Eckhard Boettcher

(c. 1985) (Submit Review) (Submit Update)

This is basically a re-release of Alan Warner’s beautiful Pharaoh’s Curse.  The method is the same but the props are not as well made.  This effect normally comes with a “red ruby” but this one comes with a blueish “stone” as can be seen.

The effect is easy to do and does not require any sleights to perform.  Just as Alan Warner devised, what makes the effect extra convincing is that you can apparently see the backs and fronts of each wooden panel before and after the vanish.

Effect: The performer pulls out three small wooden panels from a wooden box, which he shows cleanly on both sides.

A “stone” is firmly embedded in one of the panels. The three wooden panels are stacked on the table, the box shown empty and closed.

After a magic spell, the three wooden panels are shown again individually from both sides. The “stone” has disappeared. In its place there is a large round hole in one of the panels. When the box is opened there is the stone having successfully returned to it’s resting place.
